Joe B. Calkins Jr., MD, FACC, FACP, FASE​

Dr. Calkins is a graduate of the George Washington University (B.A.) and Virginia Commonwealth University (M.D.). He was a resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a fellow in Cardiovascular Diseases at the George Washington University and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Calkins spent eleven years in private practice, initially as a primary care internist and subsequently as a general cardiologist in Virginia before joining the medical staff at the Augusta VA Medical Center and the faculty of Medical College of Georgia in 2004.

Dr. Calkins practices general cardiology at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is the Chief of the Cardiology section, the Medical Director of Echocardiography and the VA Associate Director for the Cardiology Fellowship Program. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Echocardiography. His areas of clinical focus include general clinical cardiology, echocardiography and medical education. Dr. Calkins has participated in clinical research involving acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, noninvasive cardiac imaging, contrast-induced nephropathy and thromboembolic disease.
