Discordant patterns of epigenetic potential in promoters of three cancer-related genes among Homo Sapiens, Rattus Norvegicus, and Pan Troglodytes

Description

We contrasted epigenetic potential, the number of CpG sites in a promoter, among three cancer-related genes: BRAF (proto-oncogene), CDK6 (altered expression in cancer), and KRAS (proto-oncogene) among Homo Sapiens, Rattus Norvegicus, and Pan Troglodytes. We used the data viewer application on GENBANK to count the number of CpG sites in the 1000 bases upstream of the transcription start site for each gene. There was variation in epigenetic potential among species and putative promoters. The mean epigenetic potential was not significantly different among species or among putative promoters. However, there was a discordant pattern of change in epigenetic potential both among species and putative promoters. The discordant pattern does not suggest a simple explanation.
