Section of a Rat Trachea (25x; H&E)

Description

This image depicts a type of simple epithelium that looks like it is stratified – hence the name “pseudostratified.” Pseudostratified epithelium has a cell surface modification on the apical surface such as cilia (seen in the respiratory tract; indicated by the red arrow) or stereocilia (seen in the male reproductive tract). Although the nuclei appear at different levels giving a stratified appearance to the epithelium (green arrow), every cell is still connected to the basement membrane.
