Section of Ground Bone depicting an Osteon (40x; unstained)

Description

This picture shows a single osteon (black line) which is comprised of the Haversian canal (orange arrow) and osteocytes within lacunae (yellow arrow) arranged in concentric rings called “lamella.” The osteon is the base unit of mature compact bone tissue. Osteocytes are distributed within circular lamellae around a central vascular canal (Haversian canal). Osteocytes communicate with each other through fine canals called canaliculi (some shown by the red arrow).
